Disaster Dogs Dog Rescue will be hosting their 2nd annual garage sale to help raise money for our pups! The event will take place June 6,7,8 in Joliet. We are looking for item donations to sell at the garage sale (clothing, toys, books etc..). If you have any items you would like to donate please message us for drop off details or to schedule a pick up! We will also be collecting old printer cartidges, cell phones, mp3 players and laptops to recycle! Thank you for all your support!
KING- OUR FIRST HW+ RESCUE
King is a Husky Mix (Shiba Inu? Shepherd?) that was saved at the last moment from a high kill shelter. In vetting, it was found that King is Heartworm Positive. We are determined that, in conjunction with the great vet staff at NAWS, his foster parents Todd & Wendy, and the support of the dog loving community, we will see King through his treatment and right on to his Happy Tail!!!
***UPDATE ON KING 3/27/13***
King had his first of many appointments having to do with his heartworm treatment today. Things went well! He weighed in right around 53 lbs and was a good boy at the vet. His exam confirmed that, once again, he was definitely heartworm positive, and that he does have egg and larva stage as well as adult in his system. Blood-work is also being done to make sure that his organs are still functioning properly and have not begun to shut down. The vet also referred King to have x-rays done to check his heart specifically as well as the capillary function. At NAWS, the protocol recommended by The American Heartworm Association is followed. On that recommendation, he began taking monthly preventative today, and will continue that throughout his treatment and for the remainder of his life. He was also put on oral meds to kill the eggs and larva, along with Benedryl to hold off any allergic reaction to the mass amount of eggs which will hatch before they are killed by the meds and to ensure that this is less stressful on his body and that treatment takes. He will be going in for round 2 of his basic shots in 3 weeks as a booster prior to his first major HW treatment which is due in 2 months time. This will allow his the eggs and larva to die off and his system to grow strong again before the difficult part begins. His journey to recovery has now started. Thank you everyone for everything that has been done to give this guy a full recovery, and the life which he deserves.
